Why We're Not Concerned About Siemens Aktiengesellschaft's (ETR:SIE) Share Price

Published
XTRA:SIE

There wouldn't be many who think Siemens Aktiengesellschaft's (ETR:SIE) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.4x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Germany is similar at about 18x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Siemens has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this strong earnings performance might be about to tail off. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Does Growth Match The P/E?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Siemens' is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 21%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 60% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 11% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be similar to the 12% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Siemens' P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see average future growth and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Siemens' P/E

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Siemens' analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook is contributing to its current P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings won't throw up any surprises. It's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware Siemens is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
