Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Constantinou Bros Hotels Public Company Limited's (CSE:CBH) Earnings Despite 27% Price Jump
Despite an already strong run, Constantinou Bros Hotels Public Company Limited (CSE:CBH) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. The last month tops off a massive increase of 196% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Constantinou Bros Hotels may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 3.9x, since almost half of all companies in Cyprus have P/E ratios greater than 10x and even P/E's higher than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Constantinou Bros Hotels as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Constantinou Bros Hotels?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Constantinou Bros Hotels' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 37% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 500% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 23% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Constantinou Bros Hotels' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Constantinou Bros Hotels' P/E?
Constantinou Bros Hotels' recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of Constantinou Bros Hotels revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
