Stock Analysis
As Shanghai Shine-Link International Logistics (SHSE:603648) spikes 15% this past week, investors may now be noticing the company's five-year earnings growth
Shanghai Shine-Link International Logistics Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603648) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 18% in the last month. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. After all, the share price is down 20% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, Shanghai Shine-Link International Logistics actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 6.2% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
It's strange to see such muted share price performance despite sustained growth. Perhaps a clue lies in other metrics.
In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 5.1% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Shanghai Shine-Link International Logistics the TSR over the last 5 years was -6.3%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
While it's certainly disappointing to see that Shanghai Shine-Link International Logistics shares lost 1.6% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 6.0%. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it's worse than the annualised loss of 1.2% over the last half decade. Whilst Baron Rothschild does tell the investor "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", buyers would need to examine the data carefully to be comfortable that the business itself is sound. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Shanghai Shine-Link International Logistics better, we need to consider many other factors.
