Shareholders 23% loss in Heilongjiang Transport Development (SHSE:601188) partly attributable to the company's decline in earnings over past year
It's nice to see the Heilongjiang Transport Development Co., Ltd. (SHSE:601188) share price up 11% in a week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been less than pleasing. In fact, the price has declined 24% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.
While the last year has been tough for Heilongjiang Transport Development shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Unhappily, Heilongjiang Transport Development had to report a 27% decline in EPS over the last year. We note that the 24% share price drop is very close to the EPS drop. Given the lower EPS we might have expected investors to lose confidence in the stock, but that doesn't seemed to have happened. Instead, the change in the share price seems to reduction in earnings per share, alone.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 6.0% in the twelve months, Heilongjiang Transport Development shareholders did even worse, losing 23% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Heilongjiang Transport Development has 4 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
