Shenzhen Ampron Technology (SZSE:301413) Has A Pretty Healthy Balance Sheet
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Shenzhen Ampron Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:301413) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Shenzhen Ampron Technology's Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Shenzhen Ampron Technology had CN¥378.8m of debt in September 2024, down from CN¥665.6m, one year before. However, it also had CN¥204.9m in cash, and so its net debt is CN¥173.9m.
How Strong Is Shenzhen Ampron Technology's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Shenzhen Ampron Technology had liabilities of CN¥565.8m due within a year, and liabilities of CN¥164.9m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had CN¥204.9m in cash and CN¥450.4m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total CN¥75.5m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Having regard to Shenzhen Ampron Technology's size, it seems that its liquid assets are well balanced with its total liabilities. So while it's hard to imagine that the CN¥6.41b company is struggling for cash, we still think it's worth monitoring its balance sheet.
In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.
Looking at its net debt to EBITDA of 1.4 and interest cover of 6.6 times, it seems to us that Shenzhen Ampron Technology is probably using debt in a pretty reasonable way. But the interest payments are certainly sufficient to have us thinking about how affordable its debt is. The good news is that Shenzhen Ampron Technology has increased its EBIT by 3.5% over twelve months, which should ease any concerns about debt repayment. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Shenzhen Ampron Technology will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. Over the last three years, Shenzhen Ampron Technology saw substantial negative free cash flow, in total. While that may be a result of expenditure for growth, it does make the debt far more risky.
Our View
Based on what we've seen Shenzhen Ampron Technology is not finding it easy, given its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow, but the other factors we considered give us cause to be optimistic. In particular, we thought its level of total liabilities was a positive. Looking at all this data makes us feel a little cautious about Shenzhen Ampron Technology's debt levels. While we appreciate debt can enhance returns on equity, we'd suggest that shareholders keep close watch on its debt levels, lest they increase. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Shenzhen Ampron Technology .
