If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. In light of that, when we looked at Linktel Technologies (SZSE:301205) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Linktel Technologies is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.0034 = CN¥4.9m ÷ (CN¥2.0b - CN¥495m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).

Thus, Linktel Technologies has an ROCE of 0.3%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Electronic industry average of 5.4%.

What Can We Tell From Linktel Technologies' ROCE Trend?

In terms of Linktel Technologies' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 14%, but since then they've fallen to 0.3%. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.

What We Can Learn From Linktel Technologies' ROCE

Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by Linktel Technologies' reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. And in the last year, the stock has given away 37% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. All in all, the inherent trends aren't typical of multi-baggers, so if that's what you're after, we think you might have more luck elsewhere.

Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Linktel Technologies (of which 2 are potentially serious!) that you should know about.
