The Beijing Beetech Inc. (SZSE:300667) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 34%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 10% is also fairly reasonable.

Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in China's Electronic industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3.6x, you may consider Beijing Beetech as a stock probably not worth researching with its 4.5x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Beijing Beetech's Recent Performance Look Like?

Beijing Beetech could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Beijing Beetech's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 6.9% last year. Revenue has also lifted 7.4% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 31% as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 26%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Beijing Beetech's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Beijing Beetech's P/S

The large bounce in Beijing Beetech's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Beijing Beetech's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
