One thing we could say about the analysts on Fibocom Wireless Inc. (SZSE:300638) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. There was a fairly draconian cut to their revenue estimates, perhaps an implicit admission that previous forecasts were much too optimistic. Shares are up 6.9% to CN¥16.19 in the past week. Investors could be forgiven for changing their mind on the business following the downgrade; but it's not clear if the revised forecasts will lead to selling activity.

Following the downgrade, the latest consensus from Fibocom Wireless' ten analysts is for revenues of CN¥9.3b in 2024, which would reflect a huge 21% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to shoot up 28% to CN¥0.94. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of CN¥10b and earnings per share (EPS) of CN¥1.00 in 2024. Indeed, we can see that analyst sentiment has declined measurably after the new consensus came out, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a small dip in EPS estimates to boot.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Fibocom Wireless' revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2024 expected to display 21% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 34% over the past five years. Juxtapose this against the other companies in the industry with analyst coverage, which are forecast to grow their revenues (in aggregate) 23% annually. So it's pretty clear that, while Fibocom Wireless' revenue growth is expected to slow, it's expected to grow roughly in line with the industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. There was also a drop in their revenue estimates, although as we saw earlier, forecast growth is only expected to be about the same as the wider market. Given the stark change in sentiment, we'd understand if investors became more cautious on Fibocom Wireless after today.
