Fibocom Wireless Inc. (SZSE:300638) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 29% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 42% share price drop.

Following the heavy fall in price, Fibocom Wireless may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.2x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 28x and even P/E's higher than 53x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Fibocom Wireless has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Fibocom Wireless?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Fibocom Wireless would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 49% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 89% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 19% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 24% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we can see why Fibocom Wireless is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Fibocom Wireless' P/E

Fibocom Wireless' P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Fibocom Wireless maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
