Fibocom Wireless Inc. (SZSE:300638) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 66% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 11% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 37x, you may still consider Fibocom Wireless as an attractive investment with its 22.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Fibocom Wireless certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Fibocom Wireless?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Fibocom Wireless would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 26% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 66% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 14% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 19% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Fibocom Wireless' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Fibocom Wireless' P/E?

Fibocom Wireless' stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Fibocom Wireless' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Fibocom Wireless (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
