Despite an already strong run, Fibocom Wireless Inc. (SZSE:300638) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 31% in the last thirty days. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 15% is also fairly reasonable.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 37x, you may still consider Fibocom Wireless as an attractive investment with its 21.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Fibocom Wireless has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Fibocom Wireless' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 41% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 94% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 5.4% as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 38% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.

With this information, we are not surprised that Fibocom Wireless is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

What We Can Learn From Fibocom Wireless' P/E?

Despite Fibocom Wireless' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Fibocom Wireless maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Fibocom Wireless that you should be aware of.
