We Think BOE Technology Group (SZSE:000725) Has A Fair Chunk Of Debt
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, BOE Technology Group Company Limited (SZSE:000725) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does BOE Technology Group Carry?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that BOE Technology Group had CN¥145.2b in debt in March 2024; about the same as the year before. However, it also had CN¥88.2b in cash, and so its net debt is CN¥57.0b.
How Healthy Is BOE Technology Group's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that BOE Technology Group had liabilities of CN¥86.8b due within a year, and liabilities of CN¥132.1b falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had CN¥88.2b in cash and CN¥31.5b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total CN¥99.2b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
This deficit is considerable relative to its very significant market capitalization of CN¥142.3b, so it does suggest shareholders should keep an eye on BOE Technology Group's use of debt. This suggests shareholders would be heavily diluted if the company needed to shore up its balance sheet in a hurry. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine BOE Technology Group's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Over 12 months, BOE Technology Group reported revenue of CN¥182b, which is a gain of 10.0%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, BOE Technology Group had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at CN¥338m. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Surprisingly, we note that it actually reported positive free cash flow of CN¥19b and a profit of CN¥3.1b. So if we focus on those metrics there seems to be a chance the company will manage its debt without much trouble. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. We've identified 2 warning signs with BOE Technology Group , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
