In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Beijing SuperMap Software Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300036) shareholders, since the share price is down 41% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 22%. And over the last year the share price fell 35%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. Furthermore, it's down 18% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

The recent uptick of 5.4% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Beijing SuperMap Software moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

With a rather small yield of just 0.7% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. Revenue is actually up 3.4% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Beijing SuperMap Software further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 14% in the twelve months, Beijing SuperMap Software shareholders did even worse, losing 35% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
