Despite an already strong run, Insigma Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600797) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 36% in the last thirty days. Looking further back, the 11% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Even after such a large jump in price, Insigma Technology may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the IT industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 4.9x and even P/S higher than 9x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Insigma Technology's Recent Performance Look Like?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Insigma Technology over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Insigma Technology will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Insigma Technology's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Insigma Technology's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 7.6%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 17% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 19% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that Insigma Technology is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What Does Insigma Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in Insigma Technology have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's no surprise that Insigma Technology maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
