Hla Group Corp., Ltd.'s (SHSE:600398) Share Price Boosted 26% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Hla Group Corp., Ltd. (SHSE:600398) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 2.9% isn't as attractive.
Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 34x, you may still consider Hla Group as a highly attractive investment with its 15.4x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Recent times haven't been advantageous for Hla Group as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Hla Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 21%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 16% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 8.0% as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 38%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Hla Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Hla Group's P/E?
Hla Group's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Hla Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
