Despite an already strong run, Hangjin Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000818) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 40% over that time.

Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in China's Chemicals industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.4x, you may consider Hangjin Technology as a stock probably not worth researching with its 3.5x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Hangjin Technology Has Been Performing

The revenue growth achieved at Hangjin Technology over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Hangjin Technology's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 15% gain to the company's top line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 4.8% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that Hangjin Technology is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Hangjin Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

Hangjin Technology shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Hangjin Technology currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
