Guangzhou Development Group Incorporated's (SHSE:600098) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to CN¥0.25 on 27th of June. This takes the annual payment to 3.8% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Guangzhou Development Group's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Prior to this announcement, Guangzhou Development Group's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 53.1%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 34% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was CN¥0.15 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was CN¥0.25. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 5.2% over that duration. A reasonable rate of dividend growth is good to see, but we're wary that the dividend history is not as solid as we'd like, having been cut at least once.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that Guangzhou Development Group has been growing its earnings per share at 12% a year over the past five years. The company is paying out a lot of its cash as a dividend, but it looks okay based on the payout ratio.

In Summary

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Guangzhou Development Group's payments are rock solid. While Guangzhou Development Group is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
