Would Alpha Group (SZSE:002292) Be Better Off With Less Debt?
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that Alpha Group (SZSE:002292) does use debt in its business. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Alpha Group Carry?
As you can see below, Alpha Group had CN¥808.3m of debt at September 2023, down from CN¥1.15b a year prior. However, it does have CN¥465.3m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about CN¥343.0m.
How Healthy Is Alpha Group's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Alpha Group had liabilities of CN¥1.35b falling due within a year, and liabilities of CN¥251.7m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of CN¥465.3m and CN¥472.5m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by CN¥660.5m.
Of course, Alpha Group has a market capitalization of CN¥10.6b, so these liabilities are probably manageable. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Alpha Group can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
Over 12 months, Alpha Group saw its revenue hold pretty steady, and it did not report positive earnings before interest and tax. While that's not too bad, we'd prefer see growth.
Caveat Emptor
Over the last twelve months Alpha Group produced an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at CN¥51m. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. We would feel better if it turned its trailing twelve month loss of CN¥78m into a profit. So to be blunt we do think it is risky. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example - Alpha Group has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
