Ecovacs Robotics Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603486) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 5.6% isn't as attractive.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 29x, you may consider Ecovacs Robotics as a stock to avoid entirely with its 45.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Ecovacs Robotics as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For Ecovacs Robotics?

Ecovacs Robotics' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 55%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 53% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 43% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 19% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Ecovacs Robotics' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Ecovacs Robotics' P/E?

The strong share price surge has got Ecovacs Robotics' P/E rushing to great heights as well. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Ecovacs Robotics' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
