Even With A 25% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Acrel Co.,Ltd.'s (SZSE:300286) Performance Completely

Despite an already strong run, Acrel Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300286) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 25% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 30% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, AcrelLtd may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24.8x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 33x and even P/E's higher than 62x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, AcrelLtd has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is AcrelLtd's Growth Trending?

AcrelLtd's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 12%. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see EPS up by 46% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 25% per year during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 25% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that AcrelLtd is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Key Takeaway

AcrelLtd's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of AcrelLtd's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
