Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As Sensteed Hi-Tech Group (SZSE:000981) Shares Dive 26%

The Sensteed Hi-Tech Group (SZSE:000981) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.8x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Auto Components industry in China, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Sensteed Hi-Tech Group Performed Recently?

It looks like revenue growth has deserted Sensteed Hi-Tech Group recently, which is not something to boast about. Perhaps the market believes the recent run-of-the-mill revenue performance isn't enough to outperform the industry, which has kept the P/S muted. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Sensteed Hi-Tech Group, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with revenue down 8.7% overall from three years ago. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 24% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's P/S Mean For Investors?

Following Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look at Sensteed Hi-Tech Group revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
