A Look Into Kuehne + Nagel International's (VTX:KNIN) Impressive Returns On Capital
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. That's why when we briefly looked at Kuehne + Nagel International's (VTX:KNIN) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Kuehne + Nagel International:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.33 = CHF2.0b ÷ (CHF13b - CHF7.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
Thus, Kuehne + Nagel International has an ROCE of 33%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 9.8% earned by companies in a similar industry.

In the above chart we have measured Kuehne + Nagel International's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
The Trend Of ROCE
Kuehne + Nagel International deserves to be commended in regards to it's returns. The company has employed 130% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 33%. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.
On a side note, Kuehne + Nagel International's current liabilities are still rather high at 53% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line
In summary, we're delighted to see that Kuehne + Nagel International has been compounding returns by reinvesting at consistently high rates of return, as these are common traits of a multi-bagger. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 132% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
On a final note, we found 3 warning signs for Kuehne + Nagel International (1 doesn't sit too well with us) you should be aware of.
