When you see that almost half of the companies in the Media industry in Switzerland have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.7x, TX Group AG (VTX:TXGN) looks to be giving off some sell signals with its 1.4x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How TX Group Has Been Performing

TX Group hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is TX Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, TX Group would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with revenue down 4.2% overall from three years ago. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 4.1% per year during the coming three years according to the two analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 3.5% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that TX Group's P/S is higher than its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Key Takeaway

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that TX Group currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
