Here's Why We Think SIG Group (VTX:SIGN) Is Well Worth Watching

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like SIG Group (VTX:SIGN), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is SIG Group Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, SIG Group has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, SIG Group's EPS shot from €0.21 to €0.45, over the last year. You don't see 112% year-on-year growth like that, very often.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. SIG Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 14% to €2.1b. That's progress.

Are SIG Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a CHF7.6b company like SIG Group. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold €20m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 0.3% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

Does SIG Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

SIG Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So to my mind SIG Group is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies.
