Ascom Holding's (VTX:ASCN) Dividend Is Being Reduced To CHF0.10

Ascom Holding AG's (VTX:ASCN) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to CHF0.10 on the 24th of April. However, the dividend yield of 2.7% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

Ascom Holding's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, the company's dividend was higher than its profits, and made up 80% of cash flows. This indicates that the company could be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than reinvesting to grow the business.

According to analysts, EPS should be several times higher next year. If recent patterns in the dividend continue, we could see the payout ratio reaching 18% which is fairly sustainable.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from CHF0.45 total annually to CHF0.10. Dividend payments have fallen sharply, down 78% over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

Ascom Holding's Dividend Might Lack Growth

With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. Ascom Holding has impressed us by growing EPS at 49% per year over the past five years. Strong earnings is nice to see, but unless this can be sustained on minimal reinvestment of profits, we would question whether dividends will follow suit.

Ascom Holding's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. In general, the distributions are a little bit higher than we would like, but we can't ignore the fact the quickly growing earnings gives this stock great potential in the future. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
