TransAlta Renewables (TSE:RNW) Is Experiencing Growth In Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at TransAlta Renewables (TSE:RNW) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for TransAlta Renewables:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.035 = CA$110m ÷ (CA$3.5b - CA$398m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
So, TransAlta Renewables has an ROCE of 3.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Renewable Energy industry average of 5.6%.

So How Is TransAlta Renewables' ROCE Trending?
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 26% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.
The Bottom Line On TransAlta Renewables' ROCE
To bring it all together, TransAlta Renewables has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. And with a respectable 79% awarded to those who held the stock over the last five years, you could argue that these developments are starting to get the attention they deserve.
