After Leaping 34% TeraGo Inc. (TSE:TGO) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar

Despite an already strong run, TeraGo Inc. (TSE:TGO) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 34% in the last thirty days. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 5.2% in the last twelve months.

After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies operating in Canada's Telecom industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, you may consider TeraGo as a stock to potentially avoid with its 1.8x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

What Does TeraGo's Recent Performance Look Like?

TeraGo hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think TeraGo's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

TeraGo's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with revenue down 42% overall from three years ago. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 4.7% during the coming year according to the only analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 1.9% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why TeraGo's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What Does TeraGo's P/S Mean For Investors?

The large bounce in TeraGo's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of TeraGo's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
