It's Down 27% But Pivotree Inc. (CVE:PVT) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
Pivotree Inc. (CVE:PVT) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 29% share price drop.
Following the heavy fall in price, Pivotree's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of -8.9x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 12x and even P/E's above 26x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Pivotree has been doing quite well of late. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Pivotree's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 45% gain to the company's bottom line. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 78% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 11%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Pivotree's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Pivotree's P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Pivotree currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
