Docebo Inc. (TSE:DCBO) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Docebo Inc.'s (TSE:DCBO) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 7.3x may look like a poor investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Software industry in Canada have P/S ratios below 3.4x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does Docebo's Recent Performance Look Like?
There hasn't been much to differentiate Docebo's and the industry's revenue growth lately. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Docebo's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 23% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 124% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the twelve analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 14% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 19%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that Docebo is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What Does Docebo's P/S Mean For Investors?
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
It comes as a surprise to see Docebo trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
