Market Cool On MTL Cannabis Corp.'s (CSE:MTLC) Revenues Pushing Shares 32% Lower

To the annoyance of some shareholders, MTL Cannabis Corp. (CSE:MTLC) shares are down a considerable 32% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The good news is that in the last year, the stock has shone bright like a diamond, gaining 111%.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that MTL Cannabis' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in Canada, where the median P/S ratio is around 1x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has MTL Cannabis Performed Recently?

MTL Cannabis has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. Those who are bullish on MTL Cannabis will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on MTL Cannabis' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like MTL Cannabis' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 12% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 289% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 13% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that MTL Cannabis' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Following MTL Cannabis' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We didn't quite envision MTL Cannabis' P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with MTL Cannabis (at least 1 which is significant), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
