Companies Like Rio2 (CVE:RIO) Are In A Position To Invest In Growth
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, Rio2 (CVE:RIO) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 153%. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether Rio2's cash burn is too risky. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

When Might Rio2 Run Out Of Money?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Rio2 last reported its June 2024 balance sheet in August 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth US$17m. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$8.6m. That means it had a cash runway of around 23 months as of June 2024. Importantly, analysts think that Rio2 will reach cashflow breakeven in 2 years. So there's a very good chance it won't need more cash, when you consider the burn rate will be reducing in that period. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Rio2's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Rio2 didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. Remarkably, it actually increased its cash burn by 958% in the last year. Given that sharp increase in spending, the company's cash runway will shrink rapidly as it depletes its cash reserves. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can Rio2 Raise More Cash Easily?
Given its cash burn trajectory, Rio2 shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Rio2's cash burn of US$8.6m is about 6.0% of its US$143m market capitalisation. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
Is Rio2's Cash Burn A Worry?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Rio2's cash burn. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. While we must concede that its increasing cash burn is a bit worrying, the other factors mentioned in this article provide great comfort when it comes to the cash burn. One real positive is that analysts are forecasting that the company will reach breakeven. Considering all the factors discussed in this article, we're not overly concerned about the company's cash burn, although we do think shareholders should keep an eye on how it develops. On another note, Rio2 has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
