We're Interested To See How Maple Gold Mines (CVE:MGM) Uses Its Cash Hoard To Grow
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. Indeed, Maple Gold Mines (CVE:MGM) stock is up 147% in the last year, providing strong gains for shareholders. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky Maple Gold Mines' cash burn is. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does Maple Gold Mines Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. Maple Gold Mines has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the CA$19m in cash it held at March 2021. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through CA$4.5m. That means it had a cash runway of about 4.1 years as of March 2021. There's no doubt that this is a reassuringly long runway. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Maple Gold Mines' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Maple Gold Mines didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. With the cash burn rate up 30% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. However, the company's true cash runway will therefore be shorter than suggested above, if spending continues to increase. Admittedly, we're a bit cautious of Maple Gold Mines due to its lack of significant operating revenues. So we'd generally prefer stocks from this list of stocks that have analysts forecasting growth.
Can Maple Gold Mines Raise More Cash Easily?
While Maple Gold Mines does have a solid cash runway, its cash burn trajectory may have some shareholders thinking ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Maple Gold Mines has a market capitalisation of CA$129m and burnt through CA$4.5m last year, which is 3.5% of the company's market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.
How Risky Is Maple Gold Mines' Cash Burn Situation?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Maple Gold Mines is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending.
