What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. In light of that, when we looked at Mazarin (CVE:MAZ.H) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Mazarin is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.052 = CA$1.8m ÷ (CA$39m - CA$4.4m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Therefore, Mazarin has an ROCE of 5.2%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 3.3% generated by the Metals and Mining industry, it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Mazarin, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 8.0% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Bottom Line On Mazarin's ROCE
While returns have fallen for Mazarin in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 111% to shareholders in the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
