Golconda Gold Ltd.'s (CVE:GG) Shares Bounce 25% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Golconda Gold Ltd. (CVE:GG) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 42% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Golconda Gold may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.4x and even P/S higher than 25x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Golconda Gold Performed Recently?
Revenue has risen firmly for Golconda Gold recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Golconda Gold's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 14% last year. However, due to its less than impressive performance prior to this period, revenue growth is practically non-existent over the last three years overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 78% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we can see why Golconda Gold is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.
What Does Golconda Gold's P/S Mean For Investors?
Despite Golconda Gold's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
In line with expectations, Golconda Gold maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
