Analysts Just Slashed Their Teck Resources Limited (TSE:TECK.B) EPS Numbers

Published
TSX:TECK.B

The analysts covering Teck Resources Limited (TSE:TECK.B) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.

Following the latest downgrade, the 14 analysts covering Teck Resources provided consensus estimates of CA$14b revenue in 2024, which would reflect a small 6.3% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are anticipated to fall 16% to CA$2.60 in the same period. Previously, the analysts had been modelling revenues of CA$17b and earnings per share (EPS) of CA$3.68 in 2024. Indeed, we can see that the analysts are a lot more bearish about Teck Resources' prospects, administering a measurable cut to revenue estimates and slashing their EPS estimates to boot.

TSX:TECK.B Earnings and Revenue Growth July 11th 2024

Despite the cuts to forecast earnings, there was no real change to the CA$74.24 price target, showing that the analysts don't think the changes have a meaningful impact on its intrinsic value.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 8.4% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 8.9% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 15% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Teck Resources is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The biggest issue in the new estimates is that analysts have reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds lay ahead for Teck Resources. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Teck Resources' revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on Teck Resources after the downgrade.

After a downgrade like this, it's pretty clear that previous forecasts were too optimistic. What's more, we've spotted several possible issues with Teck Resources' business, like its declining profit margins.
