Equinox Gold Corp. (TSE:EQX) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 60% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in Canada have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 15x, you may still consider Equinox Gold as an attractive investment with its 12.2x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Equinox Gold certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Equinox Gold's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 339% last year. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 73% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 37% each year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 10% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that Equinox Gold is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Equinox Gold's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Equinox Gold's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
