Many Still Looking Away From Conifex Timber Inc. (TSE:CFF)

It's not a stretch to say that Conifex Timber Inc.'s (TSE:CFF) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for companies in the Forestry industry in Canada, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Conifex Timber's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times haven't been great for Conifex Timber as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to begin matching the rest of the industry, which has kept the P/S from declining. You'd much rather the company improve its revenue if you still believe in the business. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Conifex Timber?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Conifex Timber's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 50%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 24% overall rise in revenue. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 23% during the coming year according to the one analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 3.2% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we find it interesting that Conifex Timber is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Conifex Timber's P/S

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Conifex Timber currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
