We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. By way of example, ReGen III (CVE:GIII) has seen its share price rise 234% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.

So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether ReGen III's cash burn is too risky. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

How Long Is ReGen III's Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. ReGen III has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the CA$11m in cash it held at September 2021. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through CA$3.7m. So it had a cash runway of about 3.0 years from September 2021. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. How Is ReGen III's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

ReGen III didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. During the last twelve months, its cash burn actually ramped up 55%. While this spending increase is no doubt intended to drive growth, if the trend continues the company's cash runway will shrink very quickly. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

How Easily Can ReGen III Raise Cash?

Given its cash burn trajectory, ReGen III shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

ReGen III's cash burn of CA$3.7m is about 1.9% of its CA$197m market capitalisation. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.

So, Should We Worry About ReGen III's Cash Burn?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way ReGen III is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending.
