The board of Parex Resources Inc. (TSE:PXT) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.385 per share on the 15th of December. This means the annual payment is 8.6% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.
Parex Resources' Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. At the time of the last dividend payment, Parex Resources was paying out a very large proportion of what it was earning and 172% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows can expose the business to needing to cut the dividend if the business runs into some challenges.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 26.4% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 138%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.

Parex Resources Is Still Building Its Track Record
The company has maintained a consistent dividend for a few years now, but we would like to see a longer track record before relying on it. Since 2021, the annual payment back then was $0.39, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.09. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 29% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
Parex Resources May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Earnings has been rising at 4.5% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Earnings are not growing quickly at all, and the company is paying out most of its profit as dividends. When the rate of return on reinvestment opportunities falls below a certain minimum level, companies often elect to pay a larger dividend instead. This is why many mature companies often have larger dividend yields.
Parex Resources' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The payments are bit high to be considered sustainable, and the track record isn't the best. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
