Parkland's (TSE:PKI) Dividend Will Be Increased To CA$0.36

Parkland Corporation (TSE:PKI) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 15th of April to CA$0.36. This takes the annual payment to 4.1% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Parkland's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Based on the last payment, Parkland's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.

According to analysts, EPS should be several times higher next year. If recent patterns in the dividend continue, we could see the payout ratio reaching 48% which is fairly sustainable.

Parkland Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CA$1.06 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of CA$1.44. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.1% a year over that time. Slow and steady dividend growth might not sound that exciting, but dividends have been stable for ten years, which we think makes this a fairly attractive offer.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Earnings per share has been sinking by 22% over the last five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Our Thoughts On Parkland's Dividend

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Parkland will make a great income stock. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We don't think Parkland is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
