Returns At International Petroleum (TSE:IPCO) Are On The Way Up

What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at International Petroleum (TSE:IPCO) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on International Petroleum is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.098 = US$168m ÷ (US$1.9b - US$190m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).

Therefore, International Petroleum has an ROCE of 9.8%. On its own that's a low return on capital but it's in line with the industry's average returns of 9.6%.

So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at International Petroleum thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.

In Conclusion...

A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what International Petroleum has.
