TMX Group's (TSE:X) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

TMX Group's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. The last dividend was quite easily covered by TMX Group's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 4.8%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 46% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
TMX Group Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CA$0.32 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of CA$0.80. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.6% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that TMX Group has been growing its earnings per share at 14% a year over the past five years. The company is paying a reasonable amount of earnings to shareholders, and is growing earnings at a decent rate so we think it could be a decent dividend stock.
We Really Like TMX Group's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
