More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Mene Inc.'s (CVE:MENE) Shares After Tumbling 30%

The Mene Inc. (CVE:MENE) share price has softened a substantial 30% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 50%, which is great even in a bull market.

Even after such a large drop in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Mene's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Canada's Luxury industry is similar at about 1.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Mene's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Revenue has risen firmly for Mene recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. Those who are bullish on Mene will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Mene's Revenue Growth Trending?

Mene's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 19%. Still, revenue has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 7.7% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Mene's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Key Takeaway

Mene's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Mene revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
