RediShred Capital (CVE:KUT) Might Be Having Difficulty Using Its Capital Effectively
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Having said that, from a first glance at RediShred Capital (CVE:KUT) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for RediShred Capital:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.011 = CA$560k ÷ (CA$58m - CA$7.6m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
Therefore, RediShred Capital has an ROCE of 1.1%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Commercial Services industry average of 9.2%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For RediShred Capital Tell Us?
In terms of RediShred Capital's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 1.1% from 12% five years ago. However it looks like RediShred Capital might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.
The Key Takeaway
Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by RediShred Capital's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. Investors must think there's better things to come because the stock has knocked it out of the park, delivering a 124% gain to shareholders who have held over the last five years. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.
