BQE Water Inc. (CVE:BQE) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 15% in the last month. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In that time, the share price has soared some 715% higher! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 13%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, BQE Water managed to grow its earnings per share at 37% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 52% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that BQE Water shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 103% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 52% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper.
