Indie Semiconductor Expands Quantum Portfolio With First UV DFB Laser Source At 399 Nm Wavelength Indie Semiconductor has released its first Ultraviolet (UV) Visible Distributed Feedback (DFB) 399 nm single-frequency laser diode optimized for quantum computing systems based on cooled Ytterbium atoms. With the addition of this new device in the UV spectrum, indie is expanding on its previously announced LXM-U and narrow-linewidth visible DFB lasers, furthering capabilities and strengthening photonics portfolio, which is enabling advanced quantum technologies. Photonics division continues to gain momentum as part of strategic expansion into adjacent markets outside automotive, including quantum and humanoids, as demonstrated by increasing customer traction and expanding product portfolio. Photonics plays a foundational role in emerging quantum technologies primed to reshape multiple markets in the coming decade — from secure communications and advanced sensing to computing platforms that accelerate discovery and decision-making. Quantum computers based upon cold-atom and trapped-ion architectures require multiple lasers for cooling, trapping, pumping and entanglement operations. To advance these platforms, there is a need for compact, cost-effective semiconductor laser sources, which are tailored to specific atom or ion transitions, especially in the visible and UV spectral range. The ELA350028 is the Company’s first commercially available DFB semiconductor laser source in the UV spectral range with narrow-linewidth output at 398.9 nm, engineered to specifically address the Ytterbium transition for atom cooling, while delivering the stability, compactness, and scalability required for next-generation quantum systems. The device provides a single spatial mode (TEM00) and stable single-frequency output with optical power levels up to 30 mW in a TO-56 package. Higher output power levels of a few 100 mW could be realized with a DFB-MOPA architecture featuring a monolithically integrated amplifier section. Building on indie’s visible DFB architecture, the laser operates in a single longitudinal mode with sub-MHz linewidth, eliminating the need for external cavity gratings or frequency-doubling schemes traditionally used to reach this wavelength. The design also achieves high side-mode suppression and low-noise operation, key requirements for precision quantum experiments and scalable computing platforms. Key safety applications enabled by vision sensing include automated emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist (LKA), blind spot detection (BSD), driver and occupant monitoring (DMS/OMS), smart back-up, and vulnerable road user (VRU) protection. In fact, the need for improved VRU protection - which aims to safeguard pedestrians in particular - was recently bolstered by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) AEB regulation FMV127. This progressive regulation includes testing requirements for pedestrian AEB (PAEB), including low-light and nighttime testing, placing stringent requirements on vision processor performance. The iND880xx video processor system-on-chip (SoC) family sets new benchmarks in image signal processing (ISP) performance and functionality for both viewing and sensing applications. Balancing the competing needs of low light sensor performance (luminance) and the ability to differentiate colors (chrominance) for high-performance perception (for example, to accurately differentiate red and amber traffic lights) has been an ongoing challenge for legacy vision processors. High latency initialization and pipeline processing has also limited legacy ADAS camera system real-time safety capabilities. The iND880xx family addresses these unique challenges through the product’s proprietary ISP pipeline ability to support concurrent, low-latency processing of four independent sensor inputs, delivering a combined maximum throughput of 1400 megapixels per second. Additionally, proprietary ISP features include a 24-bit processing pipeline that enables high dynamic range (HDR) processing up to 144dB, with dedicated support for the broadest range of sensor color filter arrays (CFAs), including RGGB, RCCB, RYYCy, and RGB-IR, facilitating the highest performance environmental perception even in low light conditions. Further, the ISP supports eWarp®, indie’s proprietary high-performance geometric processing, to dewarp image distortion from a wide field of view lens. These class-leading ISP capabilities allow automakers the scalability to deploy multiple instances of the iND880xx into various high-performance viewing and ADAS sensing use cases across their entire vehicle portfolio. The automotive technology company has been working with an adviser as it fields interest from prospective buyers, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential information. Indie Semiconductor could attract interest from industry players and possibly private equity firms, they said. Shares in Indie Semiconductor rose as much as 16% on June 3, 2024 for their biggest intraday gain in more than six months. The stock was up 8% to $7.20 at 2:01 p.m. in New York, giving the company a market value of about $1.36 billion. There’s no certainty the deliberations will lead to a transaction, and Indie Semiconductor could opt to remain independent, the people said. Indie Launches Automotive Controller for Exterior Lighting Applications indie Semiconductor has announced its first system-on-chip (SoC) for external automotive lighting. The new iND83080 is a highly integrated LED matrix controller that simplifies the design and reduces the cost of advanced, high-definition exterior lighting applications where individual LEDs are turned on and off to deliver pixel-level control.LEDs are becoming the predominant lighting technology in automotive applications due to their inherent power efficiency, high light intensity, increased lifetime and ruggedness, design flexibility and lower overall costs. Vehicle OEMs are increasingly deploying front lighting and turn signal implementations based on matrix-based LED designs that allow individual LEDs to be controlled independently. For front headlights, this enables highly controllable and precise illumination, and in combination with beam-forming creates an adaptive driving beam (ADB) that can accurately illuminate the path ahead, while minimizing the light that causes dangerous glare for oncoming drivers. Adaptive headlights are available on select vehicles in Europe and Japan, and earlier this year, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a ruling that permits automakers to add ADB for U.S. vehicles.Delivering pixel-level LED management requires LED matrix control semiconductors. The iND83080 matrix controller SoC is specifically designed to provide pixel-level control for ADB, dynamic turn signal and dynamic positioning lighting applications. indie’s differentiated SoC features modes that reduce data bus traffic to the lighting control unit by automatically generating on-chip pulse width modulation control (“Smart Mode”), as well as allowing the device to support two pre-programmable modes (“Standalone Mode”) without need for external control. indie Semiconductor Launches Automotive Most Integrated USB-PD Programmable Controller indie Semiconductor has launched a dual-channel USB Power Delivery (PD) IC that reduces component count, simplifies designs and enhances reliability of in-cabin vehicle charging systems for portable devices. Combining power conversion and control and supporting any configuration of USB Type A and Type C ports, the iND87300 is the automotive industry’s most integrated USB-PD firmware programmable controller. OEMs are focused on enhancing the in-cabin experience allowing drivers and passengers to safely connect and fast charge personal devices inside the vehicle. Automotive USB-based power delivery is rapidly evolving to support higher power charging requirements of products such as tablets and laptops with an increasing number of ports throughout the cabin. The iND87300 has been designed to meet these challenging system requirements through an ultra-small form factor with minimal components. Further, the iND87300 supports field upgradability to future proof device interoperability and user experience utilizing indie’s firmware tools and global support. The controller brings together, in a single, ultra-compact 8.8mm x 10mm QFN package, a buck-boost converter, Arm® Cortex® M0 core processor, 64kB Flash and 16kB SRAM memory, a 12-bit housekeeping Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) and a variety of system interfaces including UART, I2C and LIN. A USB-PD PHY and firmware stack supports USB-C channel configuration and PD port control, while the on-board 32-bit MCU allows vendor-specific configurations as well as field upgrades and over-the-air (OTA) updates that ensure future compatibility with new and emerging charging profiles and USB-PD protocols. Enabling system efficiency above 95%, this device can deliver up to 60W of output power per channel, a programmable output voltage between 3.3V and 21V and supports maximum currents up to 5A. Dedicated LED illumination drivers and general purpose I/O round up the feature list. The iND87300 is sampling now, qualified for AEC-Q100 Grade 1 and is fully compliant with USB BC1.2 and USB PD2.0/3.0 standards as well as a number of proprietary charging modes. It supports both charging downstream port (CDP) and dedicated charging port (DCP) in addition to Apple and Samsung charging schemes. Direct connection to the vehicle power supply is made possible by the ability to withstand a 40V load dump from the vehicle battery and 24V tolerant pins that protect against shorts to VBAT and GND.
