C&A Modas S.A.'s (BVMF:CEAB3) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
C&A Modas' (BVMF:CEAB3) stock is up by a considerable 10% over the past three months. We wonder if and what role the company's financials play in that price change as a company's long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. In this article, we decided to focus on C&A Modas' ROE.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for C&A Modas is:
15% = R$529m ÷ R$3.5b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. One way to conceptualize this is that for each R$1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made R$0.15 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
C&A Modas' Earnings Growth And 15% ROE
At first glance, C&A Modas' ROE doesn't look very promising. However, given that the company's ROE is similar to the average industry ROE of 12%, we may spare it some thought. Moreover, we are quite pleased to see that C&A Modas' net income grew significantly at a rate of 47% over the last five years. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
As a next step, we compared C&A Modas' net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 20%.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is C&A Modas fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
Is C&A Modas Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
C&A Modas' ' three-year median payout ratio is on the lower side at 22% implying that it is retaining a higher percentage (78%) of its profits. So it seems like the management is reinvesting profits heavily to grow its business and this reflects in its earnings growth number.
Besides, C&A Modas has been paying dividends over a period of six years. This shows that the company is committed to sharing profits with its shareholders. Looking at the current analyst consensus data, we can see that the company's future payout ratio is expected to rise to 30% over the next three years. Regardless, the ROE is not expected to change much for the company despite the higher expected payout ratio.
Summary
On the whole, we do feel that C&A Modas has some positive attributes. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
