Does JHSF Participações (BVMF:JHSF3) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like JHSF Participações (BVMF:JHSF3), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

JHSF Participações's Improving Profits
In the last three years JHSF Participações's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, JHSF Participações's EPS soared from R$0.97 to R$1.29, in just one year. That's a impressive gain of 33%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. I note that JHSF Participações's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. The good news is that JHSF Participações is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 19.1 percentage points to 59%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are JHSF Participações Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own JHSF Participações shares worth a considerable sum. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth R$555m. Coming in at 15% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.
Is JHSF Participações Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about JHSF Participações's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 6 warning signs for JHSF Participações (3 don't sit too well with us!) that you need to be mindful of.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
