Shareholders in Helbor Empreendimentos (BVMF:HBOR3) have lost 76%, as stock drops 11% this past week
Long term investing works well, but it doesn't always work for each individual stock. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Imagine if you held Helbor Empreendimentos S.A. (BVMF:HBOR3) for half a decade as the share price tanked 80%. Furthermore, it's down 33% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.
After losing 11% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Helbor Empreendimentos became profitable within the last five years. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.
The steady dividend doesn't really explain why the share price is down. While it's not completely obvious why the share price is down, a closer look at the company's history might help explain it.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Helbor Empreendimentos, it has a TSR of -76% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Helbor Empreendimentos has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 78% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 12% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Helbor Empreendimentos better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Helbor Empreendimentos (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
