To the annoyance of some shareholders, Biomm S.A. (BVMF:BIOM3) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 66% loss during that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, Biomm may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in Brazil have P/S ratios greater than 10.3x and even P/S higher than 47x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Biomm Performed Recently?

For instance, Biomm's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Biomm's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Biomm's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.0%. In spite of this, the company still managed to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it is now in decline.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 86% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Biomm's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Biomm's P/S?

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Biomm's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Biomm revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
